Cynthia Gardner

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A Duval County Clerk of Courts employee who was fired, then rehired has now retired.

Cynthia Gardner was fired for mishandling $1.3 million in checks in her job at the clerk's office.

The civil service board found she was negligent, inefficient, incompetent and careless with city money, among other problems.

But the board still overturned her termination.

The clerk said Gardner returned to work Thursday, then announced her retirement and left.

An investigation into what was found as a secret fund in Gardner's office is continuing.
