Sailor seriously injured in crash on Mayport base

MAYPORT NAVAL STATION, Fla. – A Navy sailor was airlifted to UF Health with serious injuries Wednesday morning after the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a truck driven by another sailor, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The FHP report said 22-year-old Kaleb Charles Toro was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Everglades Street and Moale Avenue on Naval Station Mayport about 7:34 a.m.

A truck, driven by 26-year-old Walter James Pooley Jr., drove into the back of Toro's motorcycle, continued over a curb into a parking lot, hit the back of a parked government van and then collided with a building. The van and the building were empty at the time.

Toro was airlifted to UF Health with serious injuries, and Pooley was taken to Baptist Beaches with minor injuries.

Charges are pending, FHP said.
