SCLC plans protests across Florida

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference is planning a rally Tuesday in Tallahassee.

The protest is called Breaking the Grip of Shame and it's aimed to make the SCLC’s voice heard about many controversial topics.

SCLC State President R.L. Gundy said groups will demonstrate in cities all over Florida on Tuesday about immigration reform, community violence, voter suppression, equal justice and the "Stand Your Ground" law.

Gundy told Channel 4 that the most visible protests will happen in Orlando and Tallahassee.

"Instead of this being a place where children can grow up and be successful, it's a place where children are being thrown in jail unnecessarily. Instead of a place where someone can go to prison, does his time, he can't get out and find a job to take care of his family," said Gundy. "Instead of a place where a person has a right to self-defense but when it’s administered, it's administered to some people one way and administered to minorities another way, so we are saying you need to break this grip of shame and we need to come together."

Several groups plan to participate with the SCLC, including Florida New Majority, 100 Black Men and the Dream Defenders. In Jacksonville, the SCLC will protest at the Duval County Courthouse starting at 9:30 a.m.
