JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A civilian federal police officer for a Marine Corps installation in Blount Island accidentally shot himself in the leg during a training exercise at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Firing Range on the Northside late Thursday morning, according to police.

The police officer, who's not a JSO employee, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said all safety protocols were in place at the time, including a firearms instructor, a safety officer and a corpsman, all who are a part of the Blount Island USMC installation.

Police said as with any training accident that occurs on JSO property, they will investigate to see if they can do anything to reduce the probability of these types of accidents occurring.

Editor's note: JSO initially said the federal officer was a security guard, and then said he was a Marine.
