3 restaurants temporarily closed due to sewage water, roaches

News4Jax weekly Restaurant Report Card

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In this week's restaurant report card, a food cart was temporarily ordered to shut down because of a sewage leak and two restaurants were ordered to closed while they rid themselves of roaches.

A state inspector wrote when she washed her hands at Markham All America Hot Dogs, the water drained directly onto the ground -- a high priority violation. The owner tried to fix the problem, but the inspector said it wasn't a secure fix so she kept it closed for two days. On the third day, the sink was repaired properly and the cart was back up and running.

Two other restaurants also had closures last week, but the culprits there were on four legs.

Roma's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria on Old St Augustine Road was shut down last week for the night because of roaches. Seven were found in a crevice of a shelf over the dough prep table. 10 were on pipes under the dish machine. They also found roach excrement in the same area. The inspector came back and was satisfied that the roach problem was under control and opened them back up the next day.

You might remember Sushi House on San Jose Boulevard because we've been here before. It was shut down less than a month ago because of roaches for two days. Exactly 20 days later, the inspector found more roaches and shut the place down again for a night. The roaches were again at the sushi bar which the inspector noted is a repeat violation- a half dozen in the same place as before.

Sushi house was given another chance. The inspector came back the next day and the roaches were gone. The restaurant was allowed to open back up with high priority violations. News4Jax will keep an eye on the restaurant to see if they can keep the roaches away this time.
