Sheriff's deputies find knife on school campus

Flagler County deputies say stolen gun found in child's room prompts search

PALM COAST, Fla. – After finding a gun in her son's bedroom Tuesday, a Palm Coast mom called Flagler County sheriff's deputies for help.

Deputies headed to the Palm Coast home where they searched the boy's room and found a stolen Glock 42 -- a .380 handgun -- in a metal box. There were also two pairs of designer sunglasses and a stolen birth certificate in a wallet in the box.

The gun was reported stolen from a vehicle about 4 miles from the boy's home.

Deputies left the home and headed to Indian Trails Middle School to talk to the boy about where he got the handgun.

The child told deputies that the gun was given to him by one of his classmates. That 13-year-old student was called to the dean's office, where deputies searched the boy's belongings and found an 8-inch kitchen knife in his backpack.

"Due to the quick response of school officials and law enforcement, the student was located, and the weapon was removed from campus," said Sheriff James L. Manfre. "At this time, there is no indication that a gun was on campus."

The 13-year-old was arrested for possession of a weapon on school grounds and violation of probation for a previous charge. There were no charges against the boy who was given the gun.

News4Jax is not naming either student because of their ages.
