BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -

Officials say a Boynton Beach police officer shot and wounded a suspect who brandished a handgun while attempting to flee a vehicle during a traffic stop.

The shooting happened early Thursday in Palm Beach County.

Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said in a press release that officers stopped a gold Honda Accord around 2:30 a.m. The car was occupied by five people, all in their teens and early 20s. One of the men got out of the car and waved a firearm toward the officer.

The officer fired his weapon, hitting the suspect.

Slater says it's not known yet if the suspect fired his weapon. The suspect's gun and three shell casings have been recovered.

The suspect was taken to the hospital. The officer wasn't injured.
