An SUV crashed through a Larry's Giant Subs restaurant Tuesday afternoon after the driver had a medical emergency, according to Jacksonville police.

The crash happened at the restaurant at Lem Turner Road and Interstate 295 on the Northside about 2:45 p.m.

Police said the driver in a Honda CR-V was with his wife and stopped at a stop sign, then told wife he was having chest pain.

His wife told him to pull over, but the man passed out, slumped over the wheel and pressed the gas, police said. They said the SUV then went into the restaurant.

Witnesses said they saw the car coming and the cashiers and people behind the counter were able to get out of the way.

No one in the restaurant was injured.

The driver was conscious after the crash but unconscious when the car hit the building, police said. He was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons.

The restaurant is closed until further notice.
