The Brentwood high school was placed on code red lockdown Tuesday afternoon after another student told an administrator that Mathis had a gun. The student described it as a revolver with an older brown wooden handle, according to the police report.

When a school resource officer approached Mathis, he ran out of the school, climbed over a fence and ran down the street into a neighborhood. According to the police report, the officer gave chase and saw Mathis hopping fences in the backyards of the neighborhood, but Mathis stopped and surrendered when he was cut off by a patrol car that was providing back-up to the initial officer.

Mathis was taken into custody without incident, the report said.

No gun was found on Mathis, but a K9 unit located a loaded .22-caliber handgun along the route Mathis had run from the school.

A voicemail went out to all parents of Jackson High students Tuesday informing them of what happened. In that message, Principal Evan Daniels said the student involved will be disciplined according to the school's Code of Student Conduct, which can include a recommendation for expulsion.

Mathis is a student in Jackson's Bridge to Success program.
