Teen dies after hit-and-run

Girl, 15, struck by vehicle Saturday night on Four Mile Road in St. Johns County

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – St. Johns County deputies are investigating the death of a 15-year-old St. Augustine girl who authorities say was struck by a small pickup truck Saturday night, and the vehicle sped away from the scene.

Deputies said the Haley N. Smith was walking with two friends in the area of Kenton Morrison Road and Four Mile Road at 8:30 p.m. when she was hit. She was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries, but died during surgery, according to sheriff's spokesman Kevin Kelshaw.

Deputies are looking for a small pickup, possibly gold in color. The vehicle did not stop and was last seen fleeing south on Holmes Boulevard.

Traffic homicide investigators examined evidence at the scene and were seeking any surveillance video from the area.

Smith's death comes just more than a week after another fatal hit-and-run crash in the area.

State troopers said on November 8, 43-year-old Randy Miller was riding in the bike lane on State Road 16, just west of Four Mile Road, when he was hit just after 10:15 p.m. The driver didn't stop.

Miller was taken to Flagler Hospital, where he died the next morning.

Troopers said the vehicle that struck Miller likely has minimal front-end damage.
