Underground fire knocks out power in Tallyrand

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Firefighters and Jacksonville Electric Authority employees were called early Monday morning to an underground fire near the intersection of Talleyrand and East 30th Street that took out power to businesses in the area.

JEA spokeswoman Gerri Boyce says seven businesses lost power for about an hour.
She says it was caused by older cable that failed and caused a transformer to trip.

Some people who live in the area tell us they also lost power about 7 a.m.

"The only inconvenience is it turned the alarm clocks off when you have to get up and go to work," said Vernie McCullough. "Other than that I was sleep through the whole thing."

One lane of Talleyrand between 27th and 30th remained closed much of the day.

It's the second underground fire in about two months in Jacksonville. A fire in Riverside late April caused by a voltage surge blacked out area businesses for more than a day.

Boyce says the cause of Monday's fire is completely different.
