UNF classes, other area events canceled due to Tropical Storm Andrea

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Several events in northeast Florida have been canceled Thursday as a result of Tropical Storm Andrea.

Because the storm is expected to bring heavy rains to the Jacksonville area Thursday evening, classes held after 4:30 p.m. at the University of North Florida are canceled. University employees are permitted to leave at 4:30 p.m.

The Paxon High School graduation ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. in the UNF Arena will be held as scheduled. Events at the Herbert University Center will continue as scheduled as well.

The storm is expected to pass over the area overnight. Classes and campus activities are expected to resume as usual Friday.

Florida Coastal School of Law canceled classes Thursday afternoon. They are expected to resume Friday.

Heritage Institute in Jacksonville closed at 2 p.m. Thursday and all classes were canceled. It was expected to reopen at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Tulsa Welding School campuses was closing at 5 p.m. and will reopen as normal Friday morning.

Jones College was closing at 4:30 p.m. and all classes were canceled for Thursday evening. It will reopen Friday morning as usual.

The Florida Department of Transportation canceled a public hearing scheduled for Thursday night in Orange Park. FDOT was planning to meet with the public on a proposal to add two lanes to Blanding Boulevard (State Road 21) from Old Jennings Road to County Road 218 in Middleburg. The proposal included the closure or modification of 13 median openings along the six-mile stretch of four-lane road.

FDOT management concerned about the flooding and possibility of tornadoes as Tropical Storm Andrea comes ashore said it did not want to jeopardize the safety of any of the public who planned to attend the meeting, which was scheduled from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Thrasher Horne Conference Center on College Drive.

The public meeting will be rescheduled sometime within the next month and notice will be sent out again when the meeting date is finalized.

The Jacksonville University Presidential Alumni Reception scheduled for Thursday on campus has been postponed and rescheduled for 6 p.m. June 26 in the Howard Administration Building lobby. The Jaguars, which were scheduled to host a "Stand United" rally 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Jacksonville Zoo, postponed the rally because of the weather. It will be scheduled for a future date.

However, Jaguars receiver Justin Blackmon and his teammates are still hosting a bowl-a-thon fundraiser for Oklahoma tornado victims. It will be held at Latitude 30 from 6-10 p.m. Thursday.

The Jacksonville Suns game scheduled for Thursday night against the Mobile BayBears has been canceled. The game will not be made up as the two teams do not meet again in the first half of the season.

Teachers and Education Employee Appreciation Night, along with Nassau County Night, have been rescheduled for when the Suns return home on June 13 at 7:05 p.m. against the Montgomery Biscuits. Teachers and all school workers can get two-for-one tickets by presenting their school ID at the Suns box office.

John Rocker, scheduled to appear at Thursday night's game, has been tentatively rescheduled for July 13. Tickets for Thursday night's game can be exchanged for all 2013 games, except premium dates, at the Suns box office.

An informational meeting planned for Thursday night to discuss repair and construction plans at the Beaches Branch Library has been canceled. The meeting will be rescheduled for a future date. The Great Decisions discussion at the Southeast Regional Branch will also be rescheduled.

The Children First in Divorce class and the Social Skills class at Hope Haven Children's Clinic and Family Center scheduled was also canceled.

The Concerts in the Plaza performance scheduled for Thursday night in St. Augstine, which was to include a screening of a 1964 episode of "Route 66" shot in St. Augustine, has been canceled.

The screening has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. July 16 in the Virginia Room, Ringhaver Center on the campus of Flagler College. The musical performance by Lis and Lon Williamson with Rick Kuncicky will be rescheduled if possible, but no date has been determined.

Faith Christian Center in Arlington will not be holding its midweek service on Thursday night.
