USF medical school plan gets approval

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With little discussion, the state university system's Board of Governors on Thursday approved the establishment of a downtown Tampa campus for the University of South Florida's medical school.

The Morsani College of Medicine will move from the university's main campus, with the new facility expected to open in August 2019, according to information presented to the Board of Governors.

Initial funding has been approved by lawmakers and Gov. Rick Scott.

The University of South Florida Board of Trustees approved creation of the campus in June.
