FHP: Mechanical failure caused semi fire

I-95 southbound south of County Road 210 was blocked

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A major mechanical failure caused a tractor trailer fire on I-95 southbound near County Road 210 in St. Johns County Thursday afternoon, closing all southbound lanes before the evening rush.

Florida Highway Patrol released its preliminary report Thursday evening.

It said Bryan Bocian, 58, was driving a tractor trailer carrying non-hazardous materials when it broke down.

Bocian stopped on the shoulder and the front part of the semi became fully engulfed in flames. Bocian made it out safely.

Two lanes of I-95 were reopened during the evening rush but backups remained to the St. Johns County line.

Tow trucks were on scene and cleanup was under way Thursday evening.

One lane of I-95 southbound remained closed hours after the crash.
