Polls to open for Special Election

District 6 up for grabs after Thrasher takes new job as FSU president

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two Republicans hope voters will turn out and elect them as the new senator for District 6. The winner will replace John Thrasher.

The four counties that will be represented by District 6 are St. Johns, Putnam, Volusia and Flagler.

VOTING BEGINS IN SPECIAL ELECTION

Thrasher was re-elected in November, but resigned weeks later when he was hired as president of Florida State University. Both House District 17 Representative Ronald Renuart and District 24 Representative Travis Hutson resigned their seats to run for the Senate, which opened up those districts for special election.

Hutson told News4Jax that Thrasher did a lot for the area, and thinks the person elected could spend a lot of time representing the district so he thinks it needs to be someone who can get the job done.

Although Thrasher believes that whoever is elected has big shoes to fill, Hutson is confident in his success.

"I have a first hand knowledge of that district and where it is and what the priorities and needs are, and I think we need someone who can get the job done for them," said Hutson. "I've been very effective at passing legislation and bringing things back in the last two years and legislation specifically to our district, so I look forward to hopefully being the next state senator and being able to do the same thing once I get across the isle."

Governor Rick Scott ordered Tuesday's special primary for this senate seat, as well as both representative seats that are now open because Hutson and Renuart resigned to run for senate of District 6.
