Listen up bosses: According to new research, letting employees take a short break to play on their smartphones improves their work performance.
The research from Kansas State University found that employees who took a short break to play Angry Birds or text a friend, reported feeling more productive at the end of the day.
The psychologists created an application that tracked how long participants used their phone at work and what kind of activities they indulged in. Taking a break for some fun helped relieve stress.
"When employees are more likely to spend their time in social related or entertainment related smartphone usage, their well being at the end of the working day were higher than employees who did not," explained Kansas State University researcher Sooyeol Kim.
There were 72 full-time workers from various industries studied. Kim found the employees only spent an average of 22 minutes on their smartphones during an 8-hour workday.
