MELBOURNE, Fla. -

Authorities say a woman and a 4-year-old boy are dead after being trapped under a capsized boat on the Indian River Lagoon near Melbourne.

Fish and Wildlife authorities say the 18-foot Wellcraft Sportsman began taking on water and capsized after a squall struck on Sunday afternoon. Four of the six people on board made it safely off the boat.

Florida Today reports about 20 fishermen, boaters, bystanders, firefighters and police tried to rescue the trapped victims. When they flipped the boat, they found the child and woman wearing life jackets.

The victims were taken to a hospital where they were pronounced dead. Their names have not been released.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the accident.
