MILTON, Fla. -

A woman has learned her fate after authorities say she left six pets abandoned in her home to die.

A Florida judge has sentenced Toni Phelps, 41, to a year and a day in prison.

Authorities say she had left three dogs and three cats in her home to starve.

The Pensacola News Journal reports Phelps repeatedly told the judge she didn't leave the pets inside the house.  In 2012, Phelps left her house after it became foreclosed.

The Pensacola News Journal reports Judge John Simon responded with saying Phelps was "going to jail because this is just terrible."

Animals services received numerous calls from neighbors about the home, but weren't allowed to enter.  Phelps had denied animal service of entering her home.

Inside the home police could see  there was a dead dog.  A sheriff's deputy obtained a warrant to enter the home.  When authorities entered the home, prosecutors say trash and bags of dog food were found.
