State troopers said a driver going the wrong way on Interstate 95 near downtown Jacksonville caused a bad crash early Saturday morning.

Channel 4's Sam Kouvaris was told the crash caused such a backup for people trying to get to the start of the annual Gate River Run that the race was delayed by several minutes.

Troopers said around 5 a.m. 33-year-old Cynthia Griffin, of Jacksonville, drove her car southbound within the northbound lanes of I-95 near Prudential Drive.

She collided head on with the car 21-year-old Enfinity Ross, also of Jacksonville, was driving.

Troopers said firefighters rushed Griffin to UF Health Hospital with serious injuries. Ross was also transported with minor injuries.

Charges against Griffin are pending further investigation, according to the FHP. Troopers were still trying to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors in why Griffin was driving the wrong way on the highway.

Due to the significant damage sustained by both vehicles, wreckers were required to remove them from the roadway.

Troopers said lane closures occurred on northbound Interstate 95 from the time of the crash until approximately 6:45 a.m. Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane during the investigation.
