An 11-year-old boy in Brazil risked his life to save a dog that had been hit by a car.

Jean Fernandes ran between oncoming vehicles to pick up the dog, which had been struck by a car in Itajaí, Brazilian news site Guarda-Sol reported.

Photographer Rafaela Martins captured the boy's bravery on camera.

Jean's mother, Rubia Liliana Rose, told BioBioChile that her son often rescues abandoned or abused animals.

Brazil's News Agency of Animal Rights posted the story to its Facebook page on Monday.

The dog, named Honey or Mel in Portuguese, is still in the care of vets at a local animal control center but is doing fine.
