Cabell's big night leads JU past Stetson, 74-63
Aloys Cabell was the first man on the court, taking extra shots in preparation for Jacksonville's must-win game against Stetson on Monday night.
He took that focus and determination in warm-ups into the game, scoring a career-high 28 points as the Dolphins snapped a four-game losing streak with a 74-63 win in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Cabell hit 8-of-18 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc, while going 7-of-11 from the free throw line. It was the highest point total for a Dolphin since Ben Smith scored 32 against East Tennessee State on Dec. 12, 2009.
Cabell's big night highlighted a team effort from JU, with nine of the 11 Dolphins getting into the scoring column. Jacksonville (5-19, 3-10 A-Sun) was hot from behind the arc, tying its season high with nine 3-pointers.
"Tonight was a complete team effort," said JU head coach Cliff Warren. "Everyone that played contributed for us, whether it was scoring or on defense."
After falling behind by nine midway through the first half, the Dolphins came alive. Jacksonville rallied to tie the game at 29 on a Tevin Galvin layup as part of a 13-2 run that ended the half to give the Dolphins a 38-31 lead.
Jacksonville stormed out of the locker room to start the second half, scoring the first four points to lead 42-31. Stetson (8-16, 5-8 A-Sun) cut the deficit to three, 56-53, with 9:55 left on a Joel Naburgs 3-pointer.
The Dolphins were not to be denied on this evening. JU answered with a burst to push the lead back to nine, with Glenn Powell doing the honors with a steal and breakaway dunk that iced the game with 5:46 left.
Powell had 15 points and six rebounds for JU, while Galvin had 10 rebounds to go with his seven points. Delwan Graham had a career-high five steals to go with eight boards and seven points.
Stetson got 22 points from Aaron Graham with Naburgs adding 11 and Chris Perez chipping in with 10.
