JU beats UNF 3-2 in game 1 of series

Freshman starting pitcher Michael Baumann won his 6th game in a row Friday for JU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Paced by a career-high seven scoreless innings by freshman Michael Baumann, the Jacksonville University baseball team defeated North Florida, 3-2 at Harmon Stadium on Friday evening. The Dolphins (18-19; 4-3 A-Sun) look for the series win against the Ospreys (28-13; 6-4 A-Sun) in a 1 p.m. start.

Baumann shutout the Ospreys and moves to 5-0 on the season, allowing just three hits. He closed the door on a runner on-base situation in every inning, but a seventh inning in which he set UNF down in order. In his first at-bat, the Jacksonville native Connor Marabell drove the 1-0 pitch, deep over the center field wall for his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot that put the Dolphins up 1-0 in the second.

"It comes down to taking advantage of every scoring opportunity when you are depleted in the bullpen," said head coach Tim Montez. "We did a good job on producing in those opportunities tonight. We still have to grind and [UNF] isn't going anywhere they are in first place in our conference for a reason, they are a heck of a ball club so we have our work cut out for us tomorrow."

Game two is underway tomorrow with a 1 p.m. start while the series wraps up on Sunday with another 1 p.m. first pitch.
