Suns win Southern League crown

Jacksonville captures sixth league championship

JACKSONVILLE – The Southern League baseball crown is back in Jacksonville as the Suns beat the Chattanooga Lookouts 6-1 on Friday night to win their sixth club championship. The title capped off a magical run as the Suns won for the 16th time in 17 games, including their final ten games in the regular season to sneak into the playoffs.

Viosergy Rosa hit a 3-run home run in the first inning to give Jacksonville a 3-0 lead. Austin Barnes added to the lead with an RBI double in the fifth inning. Rosa brought in another run with a single to right field as Jacksonville extended the lead to 5-0.

Justin Nicolino pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings to lead the Suns. Nicolino, winner of the Southern League's most outstanding pitcher, posted fourteen wins to go along with the league's best E.R.A.

Viosergy Rosa was named MVP of the Southern League championship. Rosa batted .379 (11 of 29) with four home runs in seven postseason games.
