Severe storms in Georgia end by midnight

Sunday will be warm with scattered Southern storms

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A final line of severe thunderstorms pushed through southeastern Georgia Saturday night, with smaller showers trailing all the way south to Interstate 10. All of these showers and thunderstorms are pushing off to the east at 55 mph and should be offshore by midnight, making for a quieter and dryer overnight.

It was quite the active afternoon with severe thunderstorms sweeping through the area prompting several tornado warnings, mainly along I-10 during the mid-afternoon hours.

Just after the noon hour, the tornado warnings were issued for Hamilton and Suwannee Counties, and through 4 p.m. were continued and updated to include Columbia, Baker, Clay, Duval, and St Johns counties.  Around 4:45, that storm pushed off the coast.

Duval County saw a second severe thunderstorm that prompted a Severe Thunderstorm Warning between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Wind gusts were reports between 50 and 70 mph, and downed trees in the San Marco area will be investigated to determine if a possible tornado touched down briefly.

The severe thunderstorms caused quite a bit of damage; many power outages, countless reports of downed trees, and several car accidents as well.

Minor structural damage report reported from roofs being damaged, to small shelters being damaged as well.

Outdoor activities were canceled or delayed including the downtown Welcome to Rockville concert at Metropolitan Park. It was suspended twice before finally resuming after the showers and thunderstorms pushed through.

Overnight you can expect dryer quieter conditions but on Sunday the same moisture and instability will continue across our area with a shift to the south making for most of the shower and thunderstorm development to be across Northeastern Florida.

Conditions will be quieter across southeastern Georgia.

We're under marginal risk for severe weather according to the Storm Prediction Center and we may see isolated strong thunderstorms with gusty winds lightning, and small hail possible again tomorrow afternoon.
