PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -

Two riders were thrown from an ATV when it struck a barbed wire fence Thursday afternoon and one was critically injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at about 1 p.m. on State Road 21 near Baden Powell Road in the Melrose area.

State troopers said Gabriel Adams, 25, of Hawthorne, was driving northbound on the east shoulder when he failed to see a concrete culvert. The ATV struck it and overturned, then hit the fence, troopers said.

Adams and 17-year-old Morgan Vickers, of Keystone Heights, were thrown from the ATV. They were both taken to UF Health Gainesville, Adams in critical condition. Vickers suffered only minor injuries.

Troopers said neither was wearing a helmet.
