The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating an aggravated battery on the Northside, where a man suffered life-threatening injuries early Monday morning.
According to Sgt. T.K. Waters, police received a call just before 2 a.m. in reference to a shooting.
Police believe the shooting happened on Old Lem Turner Road near Trout River Boulevard, where they found 39-year-old Ernest Bell, of Callahan, bleeding from his left side.
Bell told police he had been robbed and patrons at a local business reported hearing a loud pop, according to Sgt. Waters.
"Patrons at a local business said at approximately 1:45 they found a loud pop. When they went outside to investigate they found a victim laying down and bleeding from the left side. He said he's been robbed," said Waters.
Bell was transported to UF Health Jacksonville, where he is in critical condition.
According to JSO, they have no suspect information at this point.
"We're canvassing as much as we can. Since it's so early we're having to knock on doors and wake folks up and see what we can find out. We'll be out here until we can get some answers," said Waters.
After the incident, Bell's mother arrived on scene and said the whole situations scares her.
"Very upset. Nervous. Very upset. I got a sister from Georgia coming into town and I have to drive to (UF Health) by myself, this time of morning. I'm scared. I think it's the neighborhood and the people," said Fay Oglivie.
Oglivie said she is eager to find out what happened to her son.
"It's just not a good area, the people. So I don't know if he knew the guy who shot him or if it was a drive-by shooting. I don't know. I just know he walked to the owner's front door, knocked on the door, and Butch said he fell to the ground," said Oglivie.
She said the victim is her only son and she is worried about his kids and his family.
"He's in critical condition in surgery, that's all I know. Family's there and they know I'm coming," said Oglivie.
